1 PRO TIP
Hello everyone, it's Urban! I've been asked a fantastic question this week:
How can we increase the durability and sturdiness of Ikea furniture?
So, let's dive into some effective strategies to bolster your Ikea furniture's strength:
Firstly, while assembling the furniture, remember that accuracy is key. Always follow the instruction manual carefully and use the tools recommended by Ikea to ensure a sturdy setup. Using glue during assembly can substantially increase the strength of your furniture. For wooden pieces, wood glue is a great choice. Apply it to dowel holes and any flat surfaces that connect. Once it dries, this will form a stronger bond but do not overdo it, as excessive glue can cause a mess and might damage the finish.
Next, consider adding additional hardware to the structure. Corner brackets or braces can reinforce the core structure of the furniture, especially in weak areas like the corners of bookshelves or wardrobes. These are usually made from metal and can be screwed into the inner corners to provide extra support.
Another useful method is to reinforce the furniture's back panel, which often bears the brunt of the weight. Replacing the thin hardboard included with sturdier plywood or MDF can add significant strength.
Finally, remember that how you use the furniture will affect its lifespan. Avoid overloading shelves, and be gentle when opening and closing doors or drawers. Regular maintenance, like tightening screws and checking the overall stability, can help to keep the furniture strong over time.
These reinforcements can improve the strength and lifespan of your Ikea furniture, turning these cost-effective pieces into long-lasting, sturdy fixtures in your home.
Hope that helps!
