3 GREAT HACKS

With #ikeahack tagged over 600k times yearly, we receive a treasure trove of DIY ideas. Each week we share 3 great IKEA hacks shared with us that we think you’ll like (and we didn’t post). Here’s what caught our eye this week:

#1💎

Why we like it: The IKEA PAX system, with Tyssedal glass doors, offers an affordable solution that organizes clothes and accessories with ease. The island, crafted from two Listorp sideboards, offers additional storage for shoes and boots, while also serving as a convenient laundry folding space. The current setup maximizes available space, showing that IKEA can adapt to any home.

#2💎

Why we like it: This IKEA wardrobe hack uses the PAX unit to optimize floor-to-ceiling space, adding practical storage and organization. The 'white stained oak' finish blends well with the room, and the option to expand or add wicker baskets offers flexibility. The potential for different lighting, like lamps or LEDs, gives it a customizable touch. It's a sensible use of ready-made furniture.

#3💎

Why we like it: Okay, this wasn’t a hack we were tagged in, but we found this incredibly creative idea on the IKEA Hacks Reddit page, and we wanted to share it with you.

This hacks unique approach caught our attention, yet we're still unsure if it's something we'd try out in our own home. 😂 But A+ for creativity!

1 PRO TIP

Hey everyone! I saw a question on Reddit about how to extend IKEA Pax units to the ceiling, and I thought I'd share a great approach. Here’s the question…

The key is to create custom L-shaped pieces that fit on top of your cabinet and extend to the ceiling. The horizontal part of the L attaches to the top of the cabinet, while the vertical part is scribed to fit the contour of the ceiling. For the material, consider using an IKEA Pax door. It already matches the color of the Pax units, so there's no need for painting.

Scribing is a technique used to match the contours of an irregular surface. To scribe the vertical part of the L-shaped piece to the ceiling, measure the distance from the top of the cabinet to the ceiling every 4-6 inches along the length of the piece. The more frequently you measure, the more accurate your scribing will be. Transfer these measurements onto the piece and draw a line connecting each mark. Then, cut close to the line with a jigsaw, leaving enough material to account for potential chipping. Finally, sand down to the line for a perfect fit. The metric system can be particularly useful for this process, as it allows for precise measurements and easy notation.

Once your L-shaped pieces are ready, attach them to the top of the cabinet. The length of the horizontal part of the L determines how far out the piece can be installed. To attach the pieces, drill countersunk holes through the inside of the cabinet into the horizontal part of the L-shaped piece. Countersinking the holes ensures that the heads of the screws will be flush with or below the surface of the cabinet, creating a cleaner look.

This technique is a great way to extend cabinets to the ceiling, especially in rooms with uneven ceilings. It creates a custom, built-in look and maximizes storage space. However, it does require some DIY skills, including measuring, cutting, and drilling. If you're not comfortable with these tasks, you might want to consider hiring a professional. Good luck with your project!
